Standing Out in a Crowd

How to Stand Out

in the Crowd.

Surely, this won't come as any surprise to you: There is always stiff competition for the really good jobs. That of course means you've got to stand out in the crowd!

How do you do that? Here are just a few ways:

  • Show that your job performance has always been, and continues to be, in the top echelon of your profession. This might be demonstrated by your always being among the top salespeople at your company, etc. (Be specific, though. Cite measurable accomplishments, e.g., "increased annual sales by 20%," etc.)
  • Cite job growth during your career, e.g., "promoted three times in the last five years," etc.
  • Mention salary or bonus growth, e.g., "started out at $50,000 two years ago and am now earning in excess of $100,000 with salary and bonus."
  • Be sure to include reference to any company or industry awards in your resume. "Consistently received The President's Award for Excellence," "Was featured speaker at this year's Industry Roundtable," etc.
  • Feature your "staying ability" by pointing out that you were retained by your company during any recent downsizings.
  • If you were "re-recruited" by your current employer to get sales back on track, etc., be sure to mention that.
  • Mention any Outside accomplishments/achievements, e.g., President of the Local Toastmasters, Chairman of the local United Fund, etc.

Obviously, the list could go on and on. The point is, make sure you mention any and all professional or personal accomplishments that are relevant to the position you are seeking. Doing so can certainly help you stand out in the crowd and get that great new job!
